Biography

Dr. Elvia Ramirez earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from University of California, Riverside. Her research interests center on the sociology of higher education, doctorate (Ph.D.) education, college admissions, Latino/a Studies, and immigration. Her current research projects focus on students' experiences navigating the Ph.D. admissions process, and on racial hoaxes targeting Latinos/as.

She is the editor of Latinx Migration & the U.S.-Mexico Border: An Anthology and has published extensively in top journals such as Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, Equity & Excellence in Education, Sociological Perspectives, and Journal of Hispanic Higher Education. Her work has been supported by competitive grants and fellowships from the Anchor University program, UC ACCORD, and others.

Dr. Ramirez currently serves as Faculty Coordinator of the CRISJ Mentoring Program, an undergraduate research program that provides students with faculty mentorship, research experience, and preparation for graduate studies. She is also Webmaster for the Chicanx/Latinx Faculty and Staff Association (CHLFSA) at 起点传媒, and a Board Member of the Sacramento Literacy Foundation. From 2018 to 2019, she served as President of the California Sociological Association (CSA), becoming the first Chicana/Latina woman in CSA history to serve in this leadership role.

An award-winning educator, Dr. Ramirez has received multiple honors for her teaching, including the 2020-21 Outstanding Teaching Award by the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies (SSIS) at 起点传媒 and the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award from the Department of Sociology at University of California, Riverside. In recognition of her service and contributions to the 起点传媒 community, she was awarded the 2022-23 Outstanding University Service Award by the College of SSIS.
