Profile

Dr. Chad Zullinger is an Assistant Professor of Music Education at California State University, Sacramento, where his teaching focuses on general and choral music education, music teacher preparation, and the development of future music educators. In addition, he serves as Immediate Past President of the California Music Educators Association (). Mr. Zullinger earned his BM in Composition at San Francisco State University, MM in Choral Conducting from the University of Delaware, and a DMA in Music Education at Boston University.

Chad is a self-taught guitarist who grew up participating in small groups (rock bands), in and outside of school, as well as creating music at computer workstations using MIDI keyboards, devices, and software. After attending San Francisco State University, he taught for over 20 years in a variety of classes including band, chorus, general music, and popular music performance in K-12 public school and university settings. His choirs consistently earned top ratings at state festivals that led to performances and ensembles earning accolades from prestigious organizations and associations, both regionally and abroad.

Dr. Zullinger has presented on topics in in post-secondary music curriculum and pedagogical practices with numerous NAfME state affiliates and at research conferences including the Suncoast Music Education Research Symposium, Research in Music Education (RiME), the Society for Music Teacher Education (SMTE), and the Desert Skies Symposium. In these contexts, he guides participants to engage reflexively, creatively, and critically with pedagogical approaches to curriculum and experiential learning across multiple musical disciplines and settings. He explored these themes in the , “Digital Audio Workstations and Participatory Learning,” in The Modern Band Handbook: Practical Perspectives and Lessons for Music Educators with Oxford University Press.

Dr. Zullinger’s , Experiences of Multi-Musical Music Educators In/Through U.S.-Based Preservice Music Education Programs, explored the perspectives and values of self-defined, multi-musical preservice and inservice music educators. This research examined current and past experiences of preservice and in-service educators and, alongside participants, developed a vision of how teacher education programs might embrace hybridized, multi-musical identities as central to program frameworks. He looks forward to continuing these paths of research, as well as seeking out opportunities for collaborative and creative work with the music education community in the greater Sacramento region.

Chad, his wife Angela, and two daughters, Ellen, and Hannah, reside in Sacramento, California. Outside of teaching, he enjoys playing guitar in rock bands, helping with his daughters’ softball and soccer teams, and taking walks with his dog, Isabelle.
