Serna Art Show: Nuestras Historias

El Centro Serna held its first art show on Thursday, May 7th, 2026, which was dedicated to honoring the voices, histories, and lived experiences of Latino communities across generations and geographies. Grounded in the belief that if we don’t tell our stories, someone else will, the exhibition created an intentional space for artists to reclaim narrative, preserve cultural memory, and define identity on their own terms. For too long, Latino stories have been filtered, simplified, or misrepresented. The show stood as a response-an affirmation that our voices are powerful, nuanced, and necessary.

Through painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and installation, the artists explored themes of migration, family, language, resistance, celebration, faith, labor, and love. Each piece carried echoes of ancestors and visions for the future, bridging past and present. The work reflected the richness and diversity within the Latino communities.

The exhibition is both testimony and tribute. It acknowledged struggle while celebrating resilience and joy. It ensured that our stories are told boldly, truthfully, and unapologetically by those who live them, so that future generations inherit narratives shaped by pride rather than distortion.

Chicanx/Latinx Recognition Ceremony

Originally planned and led by student leaders from the Latino/a Scholar Association (LSA) serving as the Chicano/Latino Recognition Committee, the Chicanx/Latinx Recognition Ceremony (CLRC) began as a self-sustained celebration funded through participant fees. During its early years, El Centro Serna supported the committee by providing meeting space, storing decorations, and assisting with event logistics. As CLRC grew into one of the largest student-led cultural celebrations on campus, organizational leadership transitioned to El Centro Serna to ensure the event’s continued growth and sustainability. Today, CLRC remains a signature annual celebration hosted by El Centro Serna, with graduating students able to participate at no cost. Each spring, approximately 500 students are honored, and due to the high level of participation, two ceremonies are typically held. The ceremony celebrates Chicanx/Latinx culture and achievement and features faculty and student keynote speakers alongside cultural performances that honor the traditions and accomplishments of the graduating class.

Our Voices, Our Stories: Serna Stories

El Centro Serna is excited to introduce Serna Stories, a monthly social media series dedicated to celebrating the richness and vibrancy of Latinidad at Sac State. We are reimagining Celebrating Latine Hornets into the Serna Stories series shifting the focus beyond academic and professional accomplishments to also honor who we are outside of the classroom and the workplace. At the heart of this series is our theme; Our Voices, Our Stories. We want to highlight the passions, hobbies, talents, cultural roots, and individuality that make our Latine community so beautiful and powerful. Our stories are more than titles and degrees; they are joy, resilience and lived experience. Serna Stories is open to all students, faculty, and staff. Self-nominations are encouraged!
